The Musk Versus Twitter of Trucking Mergers

Forward Air agreed to buy freight forwarder Omni Logistics. PAUL PAGE/THE WALL STREET JOURNALIn most children’s games, there are no takesies-backsies. A similar principle seems to apply when a company signs a pretty ironclad contract to buy another. Late on Tuesday, Dallas-based freight forwarder Omni Logistics said that it had filed a lawsuit against trucking company Forward Air asking for the Delaware Court of Chancery to enforce the merger agreement that both companies signed back in August. This follows a statement last week in which Forward said it might terminate the controversial acquisition, arguing that Omni—which happens to be one of its trusted suppliers—had failed to comply with merger obligations.

Those New Online Returns Fees Are Driving Away Shoppers

An Amazon returns kiosk inside a Whole Foods grocery store in Bethesda, Md. Photo: PAUL PAGE/THE WALL STREET JOURNALNew fees for online consumers to send back goods appear to be cutting back on returns as retailers had hoped, but they could also be costing companies customers heading into the holiday season. About a third of companies surveyed by logistics company Happy Returns say they have lost customers since they began charging consumers fees to return items that they purchased online. That suggests merchants are seeing a backlash even as more than half of them say the tactic has slowed the flood of goods they have seen coming back into their warehouses over the past three years.

Photo: Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg NewsWhen a measure of strains on global supply chains fell earlier this year to levels last seen before the Covid-19 pandemic, it signaled to some that the product shortages, port bottlenecks and shipping disruptions of the past three years were over and that a new era of stability was on the horizon. But industry experts say a “return to normal,” as the Federal Reserve Bank of New York described its Global Supply Chain Pressure Index in February, hardly means that companies are going back to conventional, some would say complacent, supply chains.

Warehouse Jobs Drop to Lowest Level in 15 Months
  + stars: | 2023-04-07 | by ( Paul Page | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Warehousing employment fell to the lowest level in more than a year as companies slashed payrolls amid a downturn in the goods-moving economy. U.S. employers cut 11,800 warehouse and storage jobs from February to March, according to the seasonally adjusted Labor Department preliminary jobs report released Friday. Warehousing companies have reduced employment by nearly 50,000 jobs since June, when overstocked retailers started paring inventories because of wavering consumer demand.
J.B. Hunt Expects Freight-Demand Volatility to Ease This Year
  + stars: | 2023-01-20 | by ( Paul Page | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +3 min
Trucking and logistics giant J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. expects freight demand to regain traction in the coming months as the pandemic-driven upheaval in supply chains fades and companies return to more conventional ordering cycles. “We have had good signals from our customers about Q2 starting up back to a more normalized or having a more normal environment,” J.B. Hunt President Shelley Simpson said in an earnings conference call Wednesday. “Demand for intermodal capacity was seasonally weaker than normal, as peak season activity leading up to the holidays was absent this year,” Darren Field, president of intermodal at J.B. Hunt, said in the earnings call. He said volumes weakened sequentially during the fourth quarter, with volumes up 4% in October before falling 3% in November and 5% in December. The steepest revenue decline came in J.B. Hunt’s Integrated Capacity Solutions unit, which matches freight loads to trucks.
J.B. Hunt Profit Slides on Slowing Freight Demand

Fourth-quarter profit at trucking and logistics giant J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. fell 17% and revenue growth fell short of expectations as slowing shipping demand cut into freight volumes. Newsletter Sign-up The Logistics Report Top news and in-depth analysis on the world of logistics, from supply chain to transport and technology. PREVIEW“Demand for intermodal capacity was seasonally weak in the fourth quarter, while rail velocity and performance made further progress,” the company said. The steepest revenue decline came in J.B. Hunt’s Integrated Capacity Solutions unit, which matches freight loads to trucks. Revenue at the freight brokerage operation fell 33% from the previous year’s fourth quarter on sharply lower volumes and the business reported a $2.9 million operating loss.
U.S. ocean imports closed 2022 extending a monthslong slide closer to prepandemic levels, according to a new report, leaving the shipping sector bracing for deeper declines in container volumes this year. U.S. container imports overall fell 2.8% last year from 2021, according to Descartes Datamyne figures, but the 28,276,129 containers were still 18.5% ahead of 2019 volumes. Bottlenecks at U.S. gateways have eased since last year, but new projections suggest shipping volumes will fall at an even steeper pace in the first half of this year. That would put trade behind the prepandemic levels and roughly equivalent to imports in early 2020, when Covid lockdowns crashed global shipping volume. “After nearly three years of Covid-19’s impact on global trade and consumer demand, import patterns appear to be returning to what was normal prior to 2020,” said Hackett Associates founder Ben Hackett.
